2009 Speedo Junior National Championships: Day 2

Hi Again CMSA Families,

Teams from around the US have brought over 1,000 swimmers to Columbus , Ohio for the 2009 Speedo Junior National Championships. Five of those swimmers are from right here in Mobile , AL and continued to represent the City of Mobile Swim Association with more great swimming on Day 2 of the meet. This morning’s preliminary session got the day started off with some real excitement.

The City of Mobile Swim Association continued to get great swims in relays, as the Men's 200 Medley Relay (Nicholas Colletti, Spencer Kerns, Will Glass, and TJ Leon) was the top qualifier in a time of 1:32.36 narrowly in front of the Bolles School (FL). The morning sessions individual swims continued to be really great for CMSA as the team qualified finalist in several events, including: Men's 100 Butterfly - Leon (2nd - 48.70); Men's 100 Breaststroke - Kerns ( 20th - 57.87), and Men's 100 Backstroke - Colletti ( 13th - 50.51) & Leon ( 26th - 50.88).

CMSA's only female swimmer, McGill-Toolen Senior and LSU bound Parker Glass, competed in three events: Women's 100 Butterfly (57.83), Women's 200 Freestyle (1:53.11), and Women's 100 Backstroke (58.77), but just missed qualifying in her swims. Glass did however set a lifetime best time in the 100 Freestyle, during Time Trials, with a 53.46 mark.

In finals, the Men's 200 Medley Relay swam their way to a fantastic  2nd Place / Silver Medal finish in a time of 1:31.78, beating their preliminary time by .58 seconds. McGill-Toolen Senior Nicholas Colletti led of the relay with a great Backstroke time of 23.37; St. Paul's Senior Spencer Kerns followed with a wonderful Breaststroke time of 26.09; the relays third swimmer Will Glass, a Freshman at McGill-Toolen and the Nation's fastest 14-year old 100 Butterfly, swam the butterfly leg in a blazing 22.66; the final leg belonged to UMS-Wright Senior and Auburn bound swimmer, TJ Leon who completed the 50 Freestyle in a 19.66 (this was the fifth time that Leon has gone under 20 seconds in the 50 Freestyle in two days of swimming). The 1st place relay from the Bolles School Sharks set a new Junior National Meet Record with a time of 1:30.42.

Individually, Leon finished 3rd in the Men’s 100 Butterfly (48.67) and 25th in the Men’s 100 Backstroke (51.00) during finals. Kerns moved up in his event to finish 19th in the 100 Breaststroke (59.09) at finals, and Colletti finished 17th in the Men’s 100 Backstroke final (50.98).
